About 30 of them leave on a weekday. No change, no connection, and a journey time that beats a lot of places much closer to London.

How long the journey takes

The fastest booked time is 57 minutes, and several trains do it: the 12:57, the 14:57 and the 19:57 all arrive 57 minutes later. The 07:59, 09:57, 10:57, 11:57 and 13:57 run in 58 minutes.

Those are the semi-fast services that skip most of the intermediate stops. The rest sit between 1 hour and 1 hour 11 minutes, depending on how many of Kettering, Wellingborough and Luton they call at. The slowest morning train, the 08:55, takes 1h11.

The pattern to remember is that the :57 departure is almost always the quick one. If you have a choice of trains within the hour, take that one.

First and last trains

  • First to London, weekday: 05:25, arriving St Pancras 06:36.
  • Last to London, weekday: 23:05, arriving 00:23.
  • Last back from St Pancras, weekday: 23:35, arriving Market Harborough 01:06. The 22:35 is much quicker at 56 minutes, arriving 23:31.
  • Saturday starts later: the first is the 07:57, arriving 08:55.
  • Sunday starts later still: the first is the 08:43, arriving 09:51, and Sunday journeys run nearer 1h10 than an hour.

The late-night return matters if you are choosing between here and a town further out. A 23:35 departure from St Pancras is a genuine last train after a show or a late dinner, and it is one of the practical arguments for Market Harborough over places with an 11pm cut off.

Coming home in the evening peak

Southbound gets the attention, but the evening service back is the one commuters live with. Two things stand out. The Off-Peak day travelcard at £82.60 is cheaper than the Off-Peak return at £102.80, and it includes the Tube. If you are going into London for the day outside the peak and expect to use the Underground at all, that is the ticket, and it is one of the few places in the fares system where the bigger product is the cheaper one. The second is that advance singles start at £51.00, so a booked-ahead return can come in under £110 against £155.30 on the day.

The station itself

Market Harborough station was remodelled by the end of 2019 under the Market Harborough Line Speed Improvement scheme. The track through the station was straightened so trains could take it faster, a new 265-metre platform 1 was built and platform 2 extended, and a new footbridge with lifts went in. The 57-minute journey time exists because of that work.

It is a busy station for a town this size: 943,468 entries and exits in 2024/25, close to a million.

  • Parking: 314 spaces, including 32 accessible spaces. That is a large car park for a town of 24,779 people, and it is the reason people drive in from the villages and from over the Northamptonshire border.
  • Step-free: category A, meaning step-free access to all platforms.
  • Ticket office: 06:00 to 19:00 Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 19:30 on Sunday.
  • Staffed: 05:30 to 01:00 Monday to Friday, so the first and last trains are both covered.
  • Bikes: cycle storage and cycle hire.
  • Managed by East Midlands Railway.

The station sits on Northampton Road on the south side of the town, a walk from the centre. The park being renamed Thomas Cook Friendship Park, and getting a statue and the start of a heritage trail, is directly opposite it.

Getting to the station

Trains north are quick and useful in their own right. Leicester is 13 to 15 minutes, which makes Market Harborough a viable base for working in either direction.
