Kibworth tip's opening days and hours, and its planned winter closure, which has no start date yet. Which Harborough tips are open on which days while it shuts.
Kibworth’s recycling and household waste site will close for improvement works this autumn or winter. Leicestershire County Council has not yet said when. Until then the Kibworth tip is open Sunday to Wednesday, 9am to 4pm; the full opening times, what it takes and the van rules are below.
Checked 31 October 2026: the county’s site pages still give no Kibworth closure date. The only closure in their “waste site updates” box is Mountsorrel, shut from 27 October to early December.
The council announced the works on Friday 16 October. They cover three of its 14 tips: Mountsorrel, Kibworth and Melton. Mountsorrel closes from Tuesday 27 October and reopens in early December. For Kibworth and Melton, the council said only that the closure dates are “yet to be scheduled”. (Leicestershire County Council, 16 October 2026)
Councillor Adam Tilbury, the county’s cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “These essential improvements will ensure our recycling & household waste sites remain safe, accessible, and fit for purpose now and into the future.”
He added: “While we apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closures, the works are necessary investments. I thank residents for their understanding and encourage them to use their nearest alternative site during the works.”
What the council has not said
The announcement leaves several questions open for anyone who uses the Kibworth site:
- when the closure starts
- how long it lasts
- what work is being done at Kibworth (Mountsorrel’s is a repair to the concrete base of its bottom yard)
- whether Market Harborough or any other site will open on extra days to cover
Why the days matter
Kibworth and Market Harborough split the week between them. The county’s own site pages showed these winter hours on 31 October:

So while Kibworth is shut, the only Harborough district tip open on Sundays and Mondays will be Lutterworth, and none will be open on Tuesdays or Wednesdays unless the council changes the rota. Oadby, about five miles north of Kibworth and about 12 miles from Market Harborough along the A6, is open Sunday to Wednesday. The county notes that Oadby’s days are a temporary reduction.
Lutterworth’s row has changed since we first published: on 21 October we listed it as Thursday to Saturday only, and the county’s page now shows it open Monday and Thursday to Sunday.
Kibworth tip opening times and what it takes
The Kibworth recycling and household waste site, postcode LE8 0EX, is reached from the A6 Harborough Road at Kibworth Beauchamp. Its winter hours, which have applied since 1 October, are:

Last admission is 3.55pm, and every vehicle has to be off the site by 4pm. The county says queues are least likely on Wednesdays.
Vans, trailers and permits. Vans, pick-ups and cars towing a trailer need a county waste permit, and so does anyone bringing chemicals or liquid paint. Kibworth turns away vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and trailers longer than 3 metres (9ft 8in). There is no pedestrian access: you have to arrive in a vehicle.
What Kibworth tip takes. Garden waste, cardboard, glass, cans, plastics, scrap metal, small appliances, TVs, fridges and freezers, large appliances, clean clothes and shoes, car and household batteries, engine and cooking oil, gas bottles, mattresses, carpets and other bulky household items, and dried-out or empty paint tins. Items in decent condition can go to the ReHome zone for reuse. Hardcore and soil, plasterboard, flat glass and asbestos (with a permit) are accepted at a charge, paid by card only.
What it does not take. Tyres, liquid paint and business waste (both go to Whetstone instead), car parts, chemicals, clinical waste and sharps, creosoted or treated fencing and railway sleepers, coffee pods, work uniforms, firearms and ammunition.
The county’s site page also lists temporary gaps elsewhere in the network: on 31 October books were not being taken at Lutterworth, and large appliances were not being taken at Lutterworth or Melton. Kibworth was not on that list.
What happened last time
Kibworth closed once before, for a £5 million refurbishment. In November 2021 the county council responded by opening Market Harborough seven days a week, adding Thursdays and Fridays from 9 December that year. (Leicestershire County Council, 29 November 2021)
The cabinet member at the time, Councillor Blake Pain, said the change had been “entirely dependent on having staff available”. He said he had had “a number of requests” to compensate for the Kibworth closure, including from Harborough MP Neil O’Brien and the leader of Harborough District Council.
The council has not said whether it will do the same this time.
What it means for you
- Nothing changes yet. Kibworth stays open Sunday to Wednesday, 9am to 4pm, until the council names a closure date. We checked again on 31 October and there was still no date.
- If you are planning a clear-out, a garage or garden job before Christmas, it may be worth doing it sooner rather than later.
